Also not far from Ubud is the glimmering Tegenungan waterfall, one of Bali’s most beloved places to visit. Go for a little swim or just enjoy the fantastic scenery – but you might want to be there either early or late because it’s a popular location and might get a bit busy.
Pro Tip: Want to visit more remote waterfalls? Just type waterfall into Google Maps and you’ll be surprised how many there are a short scooter ride from Ubud. Trust us, it’s worth the drive!
Watching the sun, in all its splendor, rise from Mount Batur will make it feel like you’re seeing colors for the first time. In order to experience this amazing, vibrant occasion you’ll have to get up early – but you’d kind of have to do that to avoid the heat anyway. To find the best and safest routes, go with a guide.
Ubud is one of those places where everywhere you look you’ll see views that could feed your Insta followers for a month. The palm trees, the vibrant colors, and the architecture are all as amazing as you ever imagined. Go for walks, rent a motorbike – whatever you do, you’ll be surrounded by the lovely town that is Ubud.
It would be such a shame to go to Bali and miss one of its finest cultural experiences: Balinese dance shows, with stunning costumes and even lovelier moves. You can find dance performances all over the town, and make sure to check out the captivating Kecak dance. It’s definitely worthy of some of your time, and it’ll look great on your Insta.
If you want fine art, then you’re in the right place. If you want to see how the traditional Balinese art has developed over the years, then you’re definitely in the right place. At the Blanco Renaissance Museum and the Museum Puri Lukisan, you can learn about just that, with either a one-man or a more general perspective. And guess what, there are loads more places to admire the fantastic art.
The mission of this beautiful sanctuary is to preserve the area so that all the monkeys around will have a home, and what a home it is! A lush, leafy forest with scenic paths serpentining through the trees, sculptures carved from stone and amazing buildings, not too shabby that. Oh, and there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. Keep an eye open though, because they might want a taste of your snacks.
Pro Tip: Keep your bags zipped. It’s not just food they go after! If you have a bag that doesn’t zip, make sure you leave your bag at the hotel.
Do you dare walk through the mouth of a demon and enter the underworld? Great, arrange a visit to the old Hindu place of worship, a relatively small, dark cave with statues and other religious relics. This site is thought to be about a millennium old and is still in use so dress accordingly (no knees on display). Don’t worry too much about that though, since there are sarongs on loan by the entrance.
Yes, of course, you can find great gourmet restaurants in Ubud, and yes, of course, they have delicious food, but it would be rather foolish to not try at least a couple of all the warung around. What is this warung, you ask? Well..
A warung is simply a small, family-owned restaurant or café, and in these lovely establishments, you’ll find the most authentic food that’ll make your taste buds sing with joy. At Warung Mendez, you’ll get great food made with fresh ingredients, and if you’re up for some noodles, You & Mie has got you sorted. Nine Heaven can offer you amazing kimchi dishes, tofu to die for and delicious nasi goreng – and if you end up in a food coma, the establishment includes a spa, too. How convenient!
If you’re enjoying the food so much that you can’t stand the thought of having to leave it behind, there’s a solution: cooking classes! Learn how to season your noodles and how to fry your rice to perfection – it’s loads of fun, and your belly will be forever grateful.
David Tip: Here are a few places I personally recommend, especially for you vegans. Alchemy, Yellow Flower, Earth Cafe & Market. SO GOOD!
The town of Ubud can offer you luxurious hotels, great hostels, and super fun co-living establishments – an excellent way to meet people and make new friends. While we wholeheartedly recommend having a look at these kinds of places, why not take your living situation one step further?
If you’re looking to stay in Ubud for a little while, renting your own house is a great idea: it’s relatively cheap, you get your very own space and – if you’re lucky – your very own swimming pool! You can come and go as you please, and use the space however you’d like. Perfect. It might be a good idea to look for a place with air conditioning, though. Saunas are for spas and gyms, after all.
Pro Tip: If you’re a digital nomad, and looking into the local Ubud Co-Living spaces, they’re crazy overpriced!
…to book a flight, look for a house and see all the monkeys, fantastic buildings and beautiful art? Ubud really is a paradise and a great destination both for the experienced traveler and the newbie. So what are you waiting for, start packing right now, and we might see you there!
