When it comes to life – I’m all about the experience; I also don’t mind splashing the cash every now and again if it means I get to try something new and unique. The same goes when it comes to finding presents for my friends and family for Christmas or Birthdays.
One of the downsides to the nomad lifestyle, is that I often miss family occasions like Christmas and can’t see the ones I love opening their presents. By gifting them an experience, I know they are getting to do something exciting, and something they will remember.
I can imagine them enjoying themselves as they try something they’ve always wanted to do, or experimenting with a novel experience that I think they’ll love, and I often get a photo of them having a blast as they do it!
Here are a few of the gift experiences I think belong at the top of the presents pile. Not only do they make amazing presents, but they also help your loved ones say yes to life and adventure!
From Indian cuisine to the art of perfect sushi, making the ultimate BBQ burger to discovering Vegan cooking, cheesemaking to creating divine cocktails, there are hundreds of different cooking classes out there (as well as shaking, blending, fermenting and brewing ones too) that make the perfect gift experience for foodies.
Whether it’s for a budding master chef or someone who typically burns the toast, cooking classes are a great way to explore a new cuisine, improve cooking skills and make some great new friends.
Oh, and you get to eat some fantastic food too.
Ok so I may be biased here, but is there any better gift than horse riding? A day in the saddle is pretty much my idea of a dream gift, *cough – David I’m hinting – cough*, but it’s also perfect for animal lovers of every variety.
There are a whole host of different riding adventures available, from days spent exploring meandering riding trails to hours of intensive lessons, all of which make for fun packages to cater for every riding ability.
You could try your hand at a spot of polo, spending a day on the pitch as you test your hand-eye coordination while you walk, trot and canter vying to score a goal. Or perhaps you’d prefer to discover the art of America’s Western riding and become a bonafide cowboy for the day.
Whatever the equine dream there’s a horse riding gift experience to make it come true.
For the adrenaline junkies in your life, nothing says you care them more than offering to throw them off a cliff, or a bridge, or out of an aeroplane.
Bungee jumps are one of the ultimate tests of nerve, and for people who love to feel their heart racing and the wind on their face – it’s pretty unbeatable.
There are loads of bungee jumping experiences on offer all over the world, from jumping off bridges over ravines to indoor bungee jumps through a cloud of dry ice, or if they’re really crazy, bungee jumps out of an aeroplane mid-flight!
Most bungee jump gift packages include photo mementoes and even videos of their jump; so the opportunity to humble-brag about their daring escapades will last a lifetime, as will the memory of plummeting down to the ground in total safety.
A major upgrade from your school day art lessons; art class experiences are the perfect gift for those creative cats in your friend circle. With their unique tastes and styles, buying presents for your artistic friends and family can feel nearly impossible, but with an art class experience, you know they’ll end up with something that suits them.
There are all kinds of art class experiences on offer, including still life drawing, jewellery making, photography and pottery; all of which can be enjoyed over the course of one fabulously artsy workshop day or over a series of weekly classes.
Giving the ones you love the chance to express themselves is a pretty awesome gift in my book, so why not release their inner artist? Although you could be in for homemade gifts from them for the next few years.
Possibly the most extreme of all extreme sports, Skydiving offers the ultimate feeling of freedom for those with the nerve to take a real leap of faith. With parachute jumps from planes starting at about 7000 feet, and all the way up to over 15000 feet in the air, Skydives really deliver that combination of adrenaline, joy and awe that extreme sports enthusiasts love so much.
With the option of a tandem flight (where an instructor takes care of all the technical stuff) or full Parachute Jump Courses that qualify participants for a solo jump — both available at a range of stunning locations — you can genuinely give your loved ones the gift of flight, even if just for a little while.
For those who like the idea of flying through the air but not the idea of falling, Indoor Skydiving experiences provide the feeling of zero gravity in the safety of a nice, cushioned room. Whether indoors or outdoors, in tandem or solo, skydiving is an unforgettable experience and it makes for an unforgettable gift.
Never mind killing two birds with one stone, we’re talking multiple friends or family with one awesome day of paintball. A fantastic experience for the whole family, or even better, a group of friends, paintballing gives you the chance to work, bond, show off your skills, and get some sneaky (but friendly) revenge on those dastardly friends of yours!
Whether you go as one team against strangers, split the group in two, or opt for every man for themselves, paintball is awesome fun and a great way to spend time with the people you care about.
You can give paintball experiences as a gift to someone, or for many people to enjoy without you, but arguably it’s even more fun if you join in the madness. Will you have their back or shoot them in it? Well, that depends on how grateful they are!
Finally, gifting a trip can be the ultimate Christmas present. Perhaps for a friend or family member that wants to travel more but needs that little push in the right direction?! Whether you’re gifting them a vacation to Bali to get in touch with their inner Yogi, or just sending them off to the nearby beach for a relaxing break in the sun. Flights and a hotel can be the gift that just keeps on giving; as they’ll experience so much more than just a one-off experience, even if it’s just a quick weekend getaway!
We may be living in a material world, but it’s experiences that we truly treasure forever. So, to put a lasting smile on the faces of friends and family; give them the kind of experience money can’t buy with a gift experience (you will actually have to buy it for them though).
