Never been to South Africa? Well, it’s about time, then! This fab country is more than an absolutely stunning landscape, and majestic wild animals (both excellent photography opportunities!); it’s also a dream for any adrenaline junkie who’s looking for both sun and thrilling adventures!
This list of exciting things to do in Cape Town will give you ideas on activities that are guaranteed to get that old ticker of yours racing – all while taking in the spectacular views. You’d better take a look. Right now. Don’t snooze. You might lose.
Pro Tip: The weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared to change your plans according to its mood!
This was the one we looked forward to the most – did you even know you could exchange snow for sand in that way?! Well, you can, and if you’re into board sports but prefer after-beach to after-ski, then you’ve just found the ultimate mix. You’re welcome. And don’t worry; you can take lessons if you feel like you need it! Either way, few things beat the feeling of flying down the dunes, and then landing gracefully (or face first) in the sand at the bottom.
There are rivers for white-water kayaking, yes, which will give you more than enough adrenaline (if there is such a thing?), but you can also paddle in the ocean. What’s good about that, you’re wondering? Well, it’s so big! And incredibly powerful, even when it’s calm. And you might spot dolphins. And whales. Enough said. If that’s not fast enough, you simply must try power boating. That will be.
If there is a helicopter ride, we’re gonna recommend it. That’s just the way it is. Birds don’t know how lucky they are to see the world from above; the buildings, the streets, the trees, the bodies of water, and the sand. Add the speed to that, and you’ll get your rush because few things beat helicopters – keep on reading though, they just might get a good run for their money!
If you don’t mind just a short drive (a couple of hours or so), there are caves for any occasion not far from Cape Town. Go caving by the ocean, in the mountains, or anywhere in between; if you’re not claustrophobic, there are loads of opportunities to crawl in the sand through cave tunnels! You can even visit one that homed people 70,000 years ago, in Gansbaai. That’s definitely something you don’t see every day.
Speaking of Gansbaai, this is a place where you’ll get the chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime thrilling adventure: diving with white sharks. In a cage, of course. Let’s not get too crazy! You’ll still be close enough to see these marine predators properly, and your chances to get personal with the sharks are even bigger in the winter – i.e. from June to August. In these months you can also watch them hunting!
This impressive rock formation is not only iconic, older than the Alps, the Andes, the Rockies, and the Himalayas; it’s also one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature! And there’s a reason for its popularity: the views might make your heart skip a beat, or two. You can hike your way up to the top, and if you want even more adrenaline while up there – keep reading!
Where there are mountains (and sometimes in other places too), there is mountaineering; where there’s a mountain fab enough to be one of just seven wonders of the world, there’s fantastic mountaineering! Whether it’s hiking, rock climbing, or rock scrambling (or all of the above!) that floats your boat, this is the place to do it.
Table Mountain just keeps on giving, doesn’t it! It’s virtually impossible not to get a big dose of adrenaline racing through your body while you’re being descended slowly through the air, the dollhouse-like city sitting almost a whole mile below you – if you’d bring a rock, it would probably get a rush too!
There are beaches, so of course there’s watery fun! Any surfers will wonder why on earth they haven’t visited Cape Town before, and on a windy day, you can master the waves while kite surfing! If you’d rather be under the surface, go scuba-diving and explore the bottom of the sea – and there’s snorkeling, with seals!
If you liked the helicopter ride, then you’re gonna love this; think of it as the helicopter version of a soapbox car! The gyrocopter moves smoothly through the air, and this might be the closest you can get to knowing what a bird feels like – you’ve got to try the combat mission flight, that’s the scariest one, by far!
You heard me. The strongest coffee in the world comes from Cape Town. There are others that might come close to the amount of caffeine you’ll find in a cup of Black Insomnia Coffee Company brew, but it’d be quite the challenge to find a coffee that’s this strong and still has a smooth, sweet taste. You can even buy it online if you get hooked! It might not be an adventure per se, but trying this coffee will undoubtedly get your heart rate up!
South Africa might be warm, but it’s also one of the places closest to Antarctica, and who lives there? That’s right, the small bird in tuxedos! You can see them at the beach and wind down after all the thrilling excitement and heart-stopping views. You don’t happen to know any more of those, do you? If so, please share so we can try them out!
