This enormous creation of nature, the mother of all canyons (technically it’s not, but let us dream), is one of the coolest experiences you can give your eyes, hands down. The Colorado River teamed up with the Colorado Plateau have certainly done a splendid job slowly carving into the stony land, and the result is one of the most famous landmarks in the world.
But, the Grand Canyon being outstandingly beautiful isn’t news, and when your vision is satisfied, what else can you do in this astounding place? That’s what we asked ourselves, and came up with a whole bunch of incredible adventures, that we want to share with you!
Pro Tip: The North Rim is less busy than the South Rim. Like, a lot. It’s also cooler, meaning that there are more vegetation and animals. Who doesn’t want to get photobombed by a squirrel?!
We promised you adventures, and this is a pretty decent way to start! Glide swiftly through the air in a helicopter above the steep cliffs and even higher above the meandering river at the bottom of the canyon. While the views are the same as always, the angles and the speed create a completely new experience – Grand Canyon 2.0! There are also small airplanes that will put on an equally great show and even water bus trips. But leave some room for other water adventures, just in case!
Hiking’s got many strengths, but one of the best one is definitely that it’s so adaptable. Hike for 12 minutes, 12 hours, or 12 months, across deserts, over mountains, through forests. That’s why you can turn a Grand Canyon hike into your own adventure, as challenging or relaxing as you want. We’re gonna focus on challenging (surprise!). Hiking the 24 miles from rim to rim, besting both the terrain and the heat, now that is a fun and rewarding adventure!
On the rafting trips (that can last for 14 whole days!) you’ll get to experience the water’s every single mood swing – some parts will embrace you in the kind of serenity only slowly flowing water can create, while others will make your stomach flip and your adrenaline hit the roof – in the best possible way! Rafting is great fun, the views of the canyon are stunning. Combine the two, and you’ll get a most fantastic experience.
Continuing to utilize the elements, it is now time to let not the water, but the air, take you on a riveting ride from the sky to the ground with a rush of excitement, the refreshing feeling of air streaming into your face, and the Canyon in all its grandness. Whether it’s your first time diving through the air or if you’re somewhat of an expert, this view is simply unforgettable. It just is. You can even get a special deal if it’s your birthday. Do you need another reason to go? Is there one?
Is this the best adventure? Maybe. Is it up there? Definitely. You see, it combines nature, hiking, the views, and a waterfall. Guys, a blue waterfall framed by the cliffs in a rusty, burnt orange. It’s a sight for all kinds of eyes. It takes at least 4 hours to get there, so staying the night – and perhaps the next night too – is something to consider, because if you’re in a rush you won’t have any time to splash around and cool off in the invigorating water! Oh, and there are more waterfalls in the area. Check them out too!
Why are we so eager for you to fall through the sky, you wonder? Because it’s just such a rush. The anticipation, the views, the step, the fall, the bouncing around, the sense of exhilaration and achievement – bungee jumping is just a super-thrilling collection of both exciting and fun experiences! We really recommend doing it off a bridge – it’ll feel like you’re diving into the canyon itself. Which, in a sense, you are!
Many things that are true for hiking are also true for mountain biking, with the addition of a higher speed, rushes of adrenaline and the wind blowing through your hair! You might not be able to ride on all the trails around the Canyon, but the ones available are more than enough! Some are paved, some are not, but they all have the views, the nature and the option to go as far and fast or short and slow as you like. You can rent bikes on location too, so no need to start planning how to bring yours on the plane!
If you think that you’ve seen the whole spectrum of both earthy and vivid colors in the Canyon palette before you’ve seen what the early or late sun can do, then think again. Choose a great spot, get there at the right time and you’ll have courtside seats to a truly brilliant light show, turning both the sky and the Canyon into oceans and waves of warm yellows and cool blues, and everything in between. It’s enough to make you forget about the outside world for a bit, feeling like you’re one with nature. The only downside is that your phone will never make it justice!
Or your water. Or your comfy hiking boots. And possibly some snacks. As long as you bring that you’ll be fine – even more than fine because you’ll be at the Grand Canyon, for crying out loud! If you’ve tried any of these adventures before, or have some other ones that should go on the list, or just about anything else, please share it with us because we’re well excited to hear all about it!
