Top 5 apps for traveling the world
As the famous saying goes
there's an app for that
and the same rule applies for travel. There are hundreds if not thousands of travel apps, and a lot of them do similar things, it just so happens a few are better than the rest.
I come from the tech industry. I used to design and build apps. I'm obsessed with finding the best travel apps to save me time and money. I also award points for beautiful and user experience!
For me, apps are there to solve problems. As travelers, we have a few key areas that require an apps help. For me these main problems to solve are:
- Cheap transport ✈️
- Cheap accommodation 🏡
- Planning ✏️
- Getting around 🚗
- Offline access
Seeing as this is a top 5 list and there are 5 items on the problems to solve list above, I'm going to provide an app per problem and how it helps me solve it.
1. Cheap transport
For me, at least at the moment, this means flights. Usually, I have my travels planned a good few months ahead and/or I need a flight out of the country I'm visiting.
Currently, I'm in love with an app called Air Wander. It helps me see which stop overs will make a journey cheaper. For example, if I know I want to end up in Dubai next month, it can show me places to stop over before Dubai to save money. It's hands down amazing!
2. Cheap accommodation
Airbnb, of course, takes the win here, I love living like a local and I love the Airbnb community. Hotels are too expensive in the long run, so are co-living spaces and still, despite rising costs, nothing beats an Airbnb with all the right amenities.
This is a hard one. I'm a sucker for starting locations on Google Maps, but that really only solves one aspect of planning. For me, I think Pinterest has to take this one as it allows you to pin anything and everything you could need and share the board with any travel groupies!
4. Getting around
Google Maps is a clear winner here. Before I go anywhere new I download the map offline with all my starred locations and I use it daily. I really couldn't live without it!
5. Offline access
Having your flight details, accommodation, maps, places to eat, see and drink all offline is a must have. I've only ever found one app that does this well, and that is the relatively new Google Trips app. The only downside is sometimes I forget to save a location offline, luckily for me, I have unlimited data in most countries, but for those of you who don't, set a reminder for this one!
So there you have it, my list of bitchin' apps that will help you travel faster, easier, safer and errrr... better!
Peace out guys
