Some days are rather meh, and often for no reason; they just are. There’s no need to get too worried because motivation has a tendency to find its way back, but you might as well speed the process up if you can, right? Damn right!
If you do some scrolling you’ll be met by a neat little collection of some of the things you can do to hurry your motivation up and be ready for it when it finally shows its energizing face – you’ll be back on that awesome track in no time!
Pro Tip: Remember that not everything works for everyone – do some trial and error, find what works best for you and come back to that when you need to!
What on earth are we on about now? Elementary, my dear Watson: the whips are the negative outcome if you don’t do your thing, whereas the carrots are the benefits! In other words, you think about the bad consequences that you’ll have to face if you don’t get going, and – most importantly – try to focus on what you’ll gain and you’ll be up an running in no time!
Setting goals are extremely important, both in terms of motivation and getting motivation back! Sometimes motivation can be lost if your goals are too big, too far in the future or just not that rewarding. Make sure you find the right middle ground and assign yourself a goal to achieve that has you excited but can be easily achieved. Give yourself those easy wins that build to your big overarching victory!
Get out of bed. Get off the sofa. Get out of the house. Get some music going. Get moving! You’ll probably shrug and say nah, that’s too easy, but give it a go. Your body is filled with a cocktail of chemicals that balance your mood and your mental wellbeing. Dancing the night away is one of the quickest ways to get your endorphins to release without working too hard to get it. You can also try chocolate!
Not like when Charlotte asked Harry to set the date (unless it’s a wedding that you need motivation for), but rather, don’t start straight away. Why? Because then you’ll have some time to get used to the idea through both good and bad days, and it’ll almost seem like you’ve already started, mentally. A neat little mind trick!
Sometimes other people (like bosses or teachers, yawn) decide your goals and tasks for you, and if it’s affecting your mojo, try to find a fun or interesting spin on it, or some way to challenge yourself! Perhaps take some time for your side project to get that mojo back. Attitude is a powerful tool and with a positive outlook, even the most mundane tasks can be rewarding.
Whatever you’re doing, someone else has done just that before. Or something very similar. Check them out. Find blogs, videos, TED talks, friends, anything that works and that can give you a little kick in the butt when you need it. You can visualize it as well, by putting photos, printouts, quotes, drawings, to-do lists and other inspirational content where you can see them.
Talk to your friends, your family, strangers on the internet, people you know on the internet, anyone who either knows what you’re up to or is one of those people who can make you feel better and more motivated in a jiff. People generally care and want to help if they can, just don’t forget to pay it back, or forward!
This one is a classic for a reason: clear your head, get some perspective, and some rest. Fresh eyes and brain can see things that a tired mind is completely oblivious to, and will also have a lot more energy – which goes hand in hand with motivation! Brilliant. And don’t feel like you’re wasting your time; you might even be saving some, yay productivity!
In the same spirit, changing up your surroundings a bit can also do wonders for your motivation. Go for a walk, get some new sensations and inspiration and let your brain check out a whole new set of stimuli – even if it has absolutely nothing to do with what you need your motivation for, you’ll still get those brain cells working and can reap the benefits when you’re back again!
