You’ve likely heard tales of Bali, the magical island that travelers, digital nomads, and families alike recite tales of adventure, exquisite food, and friendly locals. But if you’re unfamiliar with the island – how do you know where to stay? What to do? And when you should visit? Well, that’s where we come in – to share our top tips from one of our favorite destinations.
If Canggu is not at the top of your list – well, it should be. This paradise village in Bali is one of the pearls of the Indonesian archipelago and it’s just the right mix of trendy and rustic.
Close by is Denpasar and Kuta, but it’s fairly possible that you won’t feel the need to leave the gorgeous Canggu at all, with its year-round warm weather.
PRO TIP: don’t forget about the rainy monsoon season which lasts from October to April, peaking between December and March.
So, are you ready to visit the paradise that is Canggu? Here are some of the things you can’t miss!
Hit the gorgeous sandy beaches. Echo Beach is the spot for experienced surfers, but if you don’t feel that you belong in that category quite yet, at Charlie Brown Bali Surf Shop you can get personalized surf lessons at around £20 for two hours – quite the bargain! At Finns Beach Club you’ll get all the luxuries of a resort and if you don’t want too much sand in your flip-flops, there are lawn areas perfect for enjoying the beach, sans sand.
If you’re not in a beach mood at all, head over to the Splash Waterpark. Only a ten-minute drive, or thirty-minute walk from the center of Canggu. It’s open every day, year round – between 9 am and 6 pm. Prices are around £12.50 for kids, and £19 for adults, the question is – with six slides to choose from, do you dare try the highest one (The Giant Racer) at a whopping five stories tall?!
An hour or two – or a whole day – at the Gold Dust Spa will send you straight to a state of relaxation and tranquility; don’t worry, it’s okay to fall asleep. If you haven’t had enough of the calmness yet, at Serenity – almost on the beach – you can take yoga classes all day from morning until evening, and at under £5 a class you can try more than one.
When your batteries are charged and you’re ready to move those muscles again, hire a scooter. It’s quick, it’s cheap and will allow you to explore more of the beautiful landscape. It’s also one of the most fun ways to get around, but do remember your helmet!
If you want to drain your batteries again – and then feel that satisfaction that only comes after a good workout – there are places where you can take boxing classes, do some CrossFit or almost any other recreation activity you can think of. We’d recommend not expecting skiing, though.
To hang out with some like-minded digital nomads and get some digital work done before your surf lesson, there are a whole bunch of places for that where the views are superb, the pools just the right kind if turquoise and work doesn’t feel very much like work at all. If only that were true for doing your taxes too.
Bali might be one of the most Insta-friendly places on earth with beautiful flowers, coconut trees, and gorgeous sunsets wherever you look. Mother Nature sure knew what she was doing when she chose the colors of the landscape.
If you want to throw in some of the local man-made beauty, a visit to the Tanah Lot Temple is an opportunity to see a beautiful Hindu temple perched on an eroding rock in the ocean. The unique architecture and cultural significance makes this a popular spot for tourists and locals alike – and it’s easy to see why.
What’s that, you want some more local culture? No problem. At Hotel Tugu Bali you’ll be met with Indonesian art, artifacts and antiques everywhere you look, because this establishment is half hotel and half museum. You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy both the amazing decór and events such as traditional Balinese dance and music shows. You can almost feel the romance of Bali’s yesteryears.
Food is such a big part of any culture so there’s no wonder that you can have a great meal at any time of day in Canggu. The fusion between fresh, local produce and the aromatic flavors of Southeast Asia won’t leave anyone hungry.
Cafés are great any time of day, but mornings might just be when they’re at their absolute best. Not just for the coffee – the sweet, sweet coffee – but also for the breakfasts. Freshly made fruit smoothies, breakfast burritos and delicious bowls full of tasty goodness are all on the menu and you should probably splurge a little. It is the most important meal of the day, after all.
Canggu is a bit of heaven for anyone with a passion for a beautiful combination of healthy food and amazing flavors, how about curries, yummily spiced salads, and some mock-meat dishes? Delicious. And if it’s a tad too spicy, soothe your taste buds with cold juice and don’t forget to leave room for dessert – some carrot cupcakes are a perfect way to finish a lovely meal.
Ready for an amazing time packed with adventure, relaxation, and fun in the sun? If you weren’t before, we hope that you are now because Canggu with its beaches, chill vibe and delicious food is really worth some of your time and would be such a shame to miss out on.
