Wouldn’t it be great, having the perfect plan for the perfect moment, at the perfect time – and then it actually happens? Sounds almost too good to be true – probably because it is. Because life doesn’t work like that; you can’t plan for timing and perfection.
Sure, it’s possible to stumble upon a unicorn, but more often than not life is the result of coincidence, randomness, and (this is the big one!) taking risks. Because if you’re too afraid to do it anyway, even though you’re not ready, and if you’re never really ready – then when on earth will you actually get off your butt and follow that dream of yours? Never, that’s when!
Luckily, we’ve never been ready either, so we know a thing or two about feeling in over your head. Here are some things that we have learned along the way, take a look!
Pro Tip: You can apply this to anything: applying for a job, selling the house, the car, and the kids and go to Vietnam, or joining that book club. The sky’s the limit!
Change is scary for all of us. We’re scared we won’t be good enough, or we worry that we’re gonna fail, or we fear the unknown. Our brains don’t like not knowing what’s up and will try to think of any excuse to not mess with the status quo. Hence, we tell ourselves we’re not ready. Surely that’s the most sensible option, to wait until we are? Sometimes, yes. In most cases, no.
You can plan, plan, and then plan some more, but that doesn’t mean that everything – or anything – will actually go to that plan. Trying to schedule every single little thing is just a waste of your time, and so is worrying too much, so you might as well stop that too. That’s easier said than done, yes, but what do you know – we have some tips on that as well!
A little planning can’t hurt (and is recommended, in most cases), but make sure that both your calendar and yourself are as flexible as possible. Not only will you worry less about doing everything on your list, but you’ll find yourself in the middle of adventures you barely knew were possible; a great opportunity for personal growth!
Now, we’re not trying to say that you should be reckless and, say, don’t get any insurance, but if you want to get anywhere, you need to gamble a little. Or a lot. You might need to make some investments, or you might risk ending up looking like a fool – but that’s all part of the fun! And, really, what’s the worst that can happen?
In the words of one of the greatest football (soccer) managers of all time: if you aren’t quite sure what to do with the ball, stick it in the net and we’ll discuss your options afterward. Don’t stop to think, just do! No hesitation, just action. It might seem scary at first, but you can deal with it, easy peasy!
You want to start doing yoga but can barely get the downward-facing dog right, or you want that job but aren’t sure you know every detail about it, or you plan to go backpacking in Europe but you’re not fluent in French, which means that you can’t do it? Here’s some more wisdom for you: fuck that, of course you can! Also, you can always…
No amount of education or planning can prepare you for every single situation that you’ll be facing, whatever it is that you want to do with your life. The only thing that might do the trick is experience. And how do you get that? I’m glad you asked; by gradually learning by doing, of course!
Will you look at that, some more learning! If you start seeing failure as something that you can learn and grow from, that will ensure that you’ll know better and do better next time, not only will it bring improvement and make you feel better, you’ll also be less scared of failing! It’s it just fantastic when so many birds can be killed with just one little stone?
Don’t wait for great opportunities to come along; make the common ones awesome instead! Life won’t serve you custom-made chances on a silver plate, but that doesn’t have to stop you from finding that diamond in the rough, and polish it until it’s just what you wanted – or even something way better!
Somewhat of a motto in our little team, these words are very true and relevant to this topic, as well as to life in general. You see, the opportunities you get to change your life won’t wait. That job position will be filled, you might not get a chance to go to Bali next year – if what you want is up for grabs, then grab it and hold on for dear life! Regrets suck, so try to avoid them.
Trick question: it doesn’t matter if you’re ready or not, just do it anyway, follow your dreams and live the best, most exciting and fun life you could ever imagine! It’s scary, yes, but not as scary as the other alternatives – and don’t worry, we’ll be here every step of the way!
